Tap the map to place your first point.

Drag the map so the crosshair sits where you want to go, then let go: the point lands there. Your finger never covers the spot you are aiming at. Tapping the map works too. To look around without leaving points behind, turn placing off with the padlock on the map; moving, inserting and removing points all still work while it is off. Drag a point to move it, tap the line to add one in between, tap a point to remove it. Save it under Saved routes below.
